April 8, 2011
This morning we went to Estero Llano Grande State Park, south of Weslaco. Winds 25-30 with gusts to 41 mph. Viewed the first pond, several ducks, grebes, coots, and Black-necked Stilts.
Purple Martin flying around. Tried to stay out of the wind, viewing a Hummingbird feeder, where Ruby-throated, Black-chinned, Rufous, and Buff-bellied Hummers were coming to the sugar water. John walked one of the dikes to the alligator pond.
Trying to get out of the wind, we visited Frontera Audubon Center. Walked a short trail past a couple of feeding stations and three ponds. Saw our first warbler of the trip, a Nashville. There were also Yellow-crowned Nightherons, Brown-crested Flycatcher, and a Western Kingbird near one of the ponds. We took no pictures at this stop.
Next door to this center was the Weslaco City Cemetery, where we saw six Lark Sparrows.
Our last stop was the Valley Nature Center. We walked another short trail, but saw nothing unusual, but they did have a Native plant nursery.
It is suppose to be windy again tomorrow. Boo!
