This morning we drove east and traveled to the Tiocano Lake Wildlife Area. There was lots of water and lots of ducks, coots, shorebirds, Roseate Spoonbills, and Black-necked Stilts. New birds for Texas, Mottled Duck, Short-billed Dowitchers, Sandwich Terns.
We drove back to 83 and headed farther east toward Harlingen. Finally, after a couple of tries, we found Hugh Ramsey Nature Park, a part of the World Birding Center. When we pulled into the parking lot, we realized we had been there two years ago. Walked a trail down to the Arroyo Colorado. Hot walking, lots of prickly pear cacti blooming, and a life bird, Ruddy Ground-Dove.
After lunch, we drove to Resaca de la Palma, another World Birding Center. Rode the tram out to one of the walking trails near the oxbow formed when the Rio Grande flooded in the early spring. Had a Ranger from North Carolina, who was the driver. She was full of information about the park.
Just one new Texas bird here, a Solitary Sandpiper. We did see a Pied-billed Grebe with five fledglings. The walk was extremely hot. I was worn out by the time we got to the Tram Stop. Had to wait about 25 minutes, but the tram finally came around, and we rode back to the visitors' center.
Had dinner at a Golden Corral before heading back to Alamo.
