April 16, 2011
Today we drove south from Socorro 10 miles to Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. Spent the first part of the morning birding around the Visitors' Center and in the cactus garden. Took several pictures of Gambel's Quail. Dropped John off at the start of the Canyon Hike. Then drove the Farm Loop and the Marsh Loop wildlife drives. Had a total of 63 species for the morning. One of my favorite places.
Picked John up, and we drove to San Antonio (New Mexico, that is) to have lunch at The Owl. We have eaten there before. John had some of their Green Chili Chili. I opted for a plain cheeseburger. Though they are known for their Green Chili Cheeseburger, I am not that daring.
Drove one of the back roads toward Arizona. Stopped in Pie Town for a piece of pie. More pictures!
Traveled through a lot of lava flow going into Arizona. Drove to Holbrook, been here before as it is on old Rt. 66. Did our laundry. Very exciting evening.
