May 9

We ate breakfast at Blondie's and left Hanksville, UT around 9:15 a.m. About halfway to Green River, we turned left and went to Goblin Valley State Park. Lots of red rock and very weird natural stone piles of various shapes and sizes that look like little goblins or gnomes, if you use your imagination.
Headed up to I70 and turned east.
Nineteen miles into Colorado we turned onto the road that goes to the Colorado National Monument. More red rock, sharp turns, scenic pullouts. The highest point was over 6,000 feet.
Watched the movie about the geological history of the park at the Visitors' Center. This is near the town of Grand Junction, where the Colorado and Gunnison Rivers meet.
Stopped in Georgetown at the Visitors' Center and then drove around the old part of town taking photos of all the old houses, churches, and fire stations, as well as the old businesses downtown. Interesting place.
Drove until after dark so we would be past Denver and tomorrow morning's rush hour.
We are in Limon, CO at a Comfort Inn.

More from the road tomorrow...

  1. Your post brought back so many memories of all the bicycling I've done in CO. Last year as well as in '05 I cycled up and through the Colorado National Monument, and then on over to Gunnison from Grand Junction. Beautiful out there, for sure!! I miss it, and wish I could do it again this year. . .
