We just grabbed some peaches and muffins for breakfast, and headed over to the park's bird blind. Not very many kinds of birds so far, House Finch, Lesser Goldfinch, Northern Cardinals, Northern Mockingbird, Mourning Doves, and Black-chinned Hummingbirds until a Cooper's Hawk came in and scared them.
We then drove into town and went to the Lyndon Baines Johnson visitors' center and house where he lived as a boy. Very well done displays at the center and a good movie about LBJ.
Ate lunch at Hill Country Cafe. Had to wait in line about 15-20 minutes to get a table. Busy place.
After lunch we drove to the LBJ National Historic site. Picked up a map and CD at the visitors' center and drove the route. Along the way were the one room schoolhouse he attended, his home
(a replica) where he was born and lived the first 5 years of his life, the family cemetery, where he and Ladybird are buried, his grandfather's home, and the ranch and home where he went to relax away from Washington. We toured the "Texas White House" with a ranger. Five rooms were open for viewing, his office, the living room, family room, dining room and kitchen, but no pictures taking was allowed inside, not even without flash. It is a 28 room house, 8,000 square feet.
We drove back to the park. John dropped me off at the bird blind, and he hiked to the waterfall, which really was more like cascades. At the bird blind, besides the same birds as this morning, I had Lincoln's Sparrow, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Summer Tanager, and Bewick's Wren.
Lots of new "state birds" as we are going along, but no new "life birds" yet.
More from the road....
John and Elaine
