We left the motel in pouring rain, heading south toward Texas. Stopped in Gene Autry, OK. In an old school in area, some people started a museum devoted to Gene Autry and all singing cowboys of the old B-western movies. It is quite a place, old posters, comic books, guitars, boots, and other memorabilia. They have been collecting for 20 years.
Continued on into Texas, drove through Fort Worth area and on into Austin. We timed our trip so that we arrived at the Congress Street Bridge as evening was coming on. Lots of people were there standing in the rain, thunder and lightning waiting for the 1.5 million Mexican freetail bats to come out from under the bridge and fly around catching insects. It got darker and darker, the parking lot became emptier and emptier. Finally, we gave up, too. The bats never did come out.
We headed for Johnson City intending to spend the night in the Best Western, the only motel. However, when we arrived, the motel was full. We then drove to Pedernales Falls State Park, 8 miles north, and pitched our tent by flashlight.
By this time it was about 10:30 or 11:o0, so we just crawled in our sleeping bags and went to sleep.
More from the road tomorrow....
