January 21, 2011

Left this morning from South Carolina around 8:30. Traveled through Georgia. Always enjoy the sight of the salt marshes, though not many birds were on the waters. Started to rain around noon.
Stopped in Kingsland, GA at a Shoney's for lunch. Pouring around 1:00 p.m.
Entered Florida on I95. Finally arrived at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge around 4:00 p.m. Raining again so birded from the car. Drove out a sand road we hadn't driven before. Saw several birds for the first time for the year: White and Brown Pelicans, Great Blue and Tricolored Herons, Great, Cattle, Snowy and Reddish Egrets, Shorebirds: Ruddy Turnstones, Semi-Palmated Sandpipers, Sanderlings, Dunlins, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Black Skimmers, Sandwich and Caspian Terns, White Ibis, and lots of other species, but nothing new.
We are in a Quality Inn on I95. Tomorrow we will go back into Titusville and go to the wildlife refuge again, driving the Atlantic.
